On the 22nd October 2005, just south of the Thames, GJ’s pub hosted the gathering of the crème-de-le-crème of London’s finest athletes, supporters and friends. An awards ceremony was followed by a braai-dinner which catered for the hundred or so members who were all dressed in various garments and disguises in line with the evening’s themed festivities.
In its first year in the UK, SAUK grew from a handful of friends to a triathlon club consisting of more than 150 athletes. Few clubs could boast that their athletes participated in races in the UK, Switzerland, France, Denmark, Spain, Canada, USA, Monaco and South Africa. And this in the club’s first year of inception.
Here were the highlights of 2005:
- The launching of the club’s website at www.sauktri.org
- The establishment of organised swim-bike-run training sessions in the south west of London catering for over a hundred athletes
- Obtaining the services of 2 triathlon coaches trained under the British Triathlon Association
- Team training excursion to Girona, Spain
- Training rides from London to Bournemouth incorporating double century team rides
- Attendance of our athletes at various Ironman (3.8k swim, 180k bike, 42.2k run) races in Germany, South Africa, Austria, Spain, France, Monaco and the UK
- One of SAUK’s athletes represented Great Britain in World Middle Distance Championships
- More than 20 athletes, clad in SAUK’s new blue and yellow tri outfit, represented the club in the World’s biggest triathlon at the Michelob London Triathlon with coverage of one of our female athletes, in full flight, appearing on BBC Grandstand
- Three of our members qualified for the 70.3 World Championships in Clearwater, Florida (USA), at the UK’s qualifying event held at Longleat, Wiltshire
- Further, we had 7 athletes represent their countries (South Africa; Great Britain; Ireland and Italy) in the 2005 Honolulu Triathlon World Championships
Many thanks to the sponsors for contributing to the raffle prizes, and awards made to the various athletes. The main raffle prize of a week’s Ski Holiday trip in Europe was won by Alison Coates.
Nominees and eventual winners in various categories were selected by SAUK’s members and committee, the results of which are set out in the following page.
Thanks in particular to all our resolute supporters and unstoppable athletes.
Here’s to a happy Christmas and safe and successful 2006.
