Keeto's Stag

That's Matt Godwin standing in the centre. Keeto has the reindeer horns. It helps the paintballing opponents find Keeto when he's hiding behind oil drums. It levels the playing field somewhat. Keeto and Matt (aka the Hoff) are renowned at the Cape Epic for having music blaring from their iPods. They are also known for showing the moose horn signal to any photographers out on the course.

Stage 3
Calitzdorp to Riversdale (133km; 2 340m of climbing)
Out of the 1198 riders who started in Knysna, 1112 are still in the race and going strong. 15 riders are competing with a blue number board, meaning they can still ride, but can't compete for overall results. It’s interesting to note that on day 3, the winners of Stage One withdrew from the race due to injury. You go hard too early, you risk not finishing.

Nick Stephenson said the fatigue was setting in and he was struggling to get his heart rate over 150 beats per minute. Despite a few punctures and mechanical issues, the boys held tough and were in fairly good spirits after their day in the sun.

For the first few k's today, Keeto and the Hoff were doing well. Their legs weren’t hurting as much as their undercarriages. Notwithstanding the Zambuk and shammy cream, sitting on the mountain bike was becoming the biggest obstacle. Keeto rode for 17 k’s standing up as he couldn’t handle the pain of sitting on his seat anymore. He said that little pebbles feel like a pineapple has been shoved up your rectum.

Walking up some of the hills was impossible in bike cleats and Keeto had to have acupuncture post-race because of a strain on his calf. He also risked dehydration as he rode the last few hours of the race without water, as his Camelback was leaking water.

Certain quips and wisdoms came out of the day:

  • Never look up when you’re climbing. And when you smell smoke that’s your arse burning.
  • I'm going to stand for the entire wedding.
  • I'd rather do the English Channel again than have to do another technical descent.
  • The Epic is harder than an Ironman.
  • Always check your iPod selection, because your competitors don't like climbing listening to Celine Dion.

Today, Keeto and Godwin spent 8 hours and 3 minutes on their bikes.

Team Aero: 68th to 110th place (slowed down by the punctures no doubt)
Team Shlang Balles: 261st to 265th place
Winning time: 4h16m Cannondale Vredestein (also winners of stage 2) - Roel Paulissen (Belgium)/ Jakob Fuglsang (Denmark)

The 1st April sees the guys tackling 121k's to Swellendam with 2,620 metres of climbing, the second biggest climbing day.
