Keeto made it to the start of Stage 7. Nick Stephenson said most guys would have pulled the plug at that stage. The Hoff was struggling with some knee pain but after having strapped it up, was battling on through.
Grabouw is said to be the home of South Africa's best boerewors (farmer's sausage). It's a bit of an art. And people are proud of the reputation.
For Stage 7, the riders enjoyed a shorter route from Hermanus to Grabouw. Covering 91km and 1,984m of climbing, the riders faced steep tar to the top of the seaside town of Hermanus. It's one of the best places to see humpback whales. From there it was a mixture of sand and rocky jeep tracks before single tracking through the Lebanon Nature Reserve.
91k's is pretty easy, you may think. It took Keeto and the Hoff 7h33m to finish it. One tough SOB day.
Keeto sent a text that night:
After Voltaren jab, and both Achilles strapped, I managed to finish. Most painful 7 hours of my life. Ground down a few teeth from pain. I only have to get through another 7 hours tomorrow and get the medal. Tri season is over, no Ironman SA for me, but I cannot stop now. Unless Achilles snap. Get ready to drink.
