Last email from Keeto:
OK we finished! Got medal and T-shirt. 250k's with broken Achilles. Hardest thing I've ever done. Time to get hammered. You have to do Epic. It is tough.
After losing his partner, Shane Peters, to a broken bike, Nick Stephenson soldiered on and finished the Cape Epic. He said something interesting about Wayne Keet and Matt Godwin:
"Those boys didn't really train for one of the biggest races out there. And yet, of the guys out there, they're still one of the only teams to finish. That's pretty solid.”
Nick's legs were pretty sore post race, but he was diligent and the training ensured he'd be back out there in no time at all. Nick's got a few weeks off and then starts his preparations for the Trans Alps mountain bike race, probably Europe's toughest event. Who knows, Shane might be there too, to finish his first race as a dad.
The Hoff's Achilles started to hurt “big time” on the last day. Despite never having done anything of this sort, he held strong and endured to the end. Not bad for a rookie. No doubt it's a sign of good things to come.
And Keeto, well what can you say about the boy. Most guys would've given up long ago. But he threw everything in the bag including his Ironman South Africa and possibly his first Ironman Roth. He wanted to finish something he had started. And in this day and age of quick fixes and short cuts, he decided to persevere despite the odds. Some might say it's foolish to put yourself through such pain and hardship. They're probably right. But I think it's noble to make a promise to yourself, and team mate (a future brother-in-law nonetheless), and to be a man of your word.
Rocky Mountain's Pia Sundstedt and Alison Sydor wipe out in spectacular fashion across the finish line at the final stage of the Cape Epic.
